Clean-install Surface via recovery USB

Before starting

  1. Make sure to backup BitLocker key into Microsoft account

Recovery steps

  1. Download Surface’s factory image at Microsoft website
  2. Create recovery disk by using Windows
    1. select Start and search for Create a recovery drive
    2. follow instructions until complete (at this stage you will get a empty bootable recovery drive)
  3. Unzip downloaded factory images, and copy them into recovery drive
  4. Plug recovery drive into Surface
  5. Hold volume-down button, then press power button once
  6. Continue holding volume button until Microsoft logo appears
  7. Select Troubleshoot > Recover from a drive > Fully clean the drive
  8. Press Recover button
  9. Done!
